Tips for Preventing Yeast Infections

Yeast infections, also called candidiasis, is the result of a sudden overgrowth of the yeast varieties that are naturally found in the body. The most common culprit is the Candida albicans species, although other varieties can occasionally be triggered for this sudden growth. Some people are more prone to yeast infections than others. These tips help for preventing yeast infections from getting started in the first place.

One cause of infection is taking oral antibiotics. The antibiotics do not discriminate so they kill the good with the bad. There are beneficial bacteria that keep the yeast under control so if antibiotics kill off the good bacteria, it gives the Candida a chance to grow uncontrolled. One way to counter this is to eat daily at least 2 8 oz. containers of yogurt containing live acidophilus cultures (morning and night would be best). The acidophilus is a good bacteria that helps control the yeast.

What is a Candidiasis Infection?

Candidiasis is an unfamiliar term to most of us but the resulting infection is common – it’s a yeast infection. The infection is caused by yeast, a fungus which is a cousin to the yeast we use to make baked goods rise. Now, there is not a problem with the fungus itself as it naturally exists on the human body; it’s microscopic so not visible to the naked eye. The problem is when this fungus goes through a rapid growth period, rather than remaining in the normal balance. That results in the condition that we call a candidiasis infection, although it′s not truly an infection.

There are over 20 different species of the Candida fungi but the one that most commonly becomes an issue is the Candida albicans variety. The infections can be found anywhere on the body but there are four types that are most common: vaginal yeast infections, diaper rash infections on infants, fingernail infections and thrush (an oral infection). The vaginal candidiasis infection is the one that produces the most uncomfortable symptoms much of the time.

Thrush Symptoms – When to Take Your Baby to the Doctor

Thrush is an oral yeast infection that primarily affects newborn babies, up to about a month old. Occasionally an older infant or even an adult can catch thrush but it’s much less common. As long as the infection is treated right away, you don’t have to worry about any long lasting effects but you should know what to look for.

Generally, thrush symptoms are not noticed until a baby seems to be uncomfortable or even in outright pain when feeding. That′s because thrush shows up in white patches inside the mouth that look an awful lot like the film left in any bottle fed baby′s mouth. You can tell the difference if you rinse the baby’s mouth or wipe his tongue and the patches don’t come off easily. Be very careful on wiping harder because that can actually make the mouth start bleeding.

Chronic Yeast Infection – Is Your Diet Causing It?

Out of the 75% of all women who have had at least one yeast infection, there is a percentage of these women who will suffer from chronic yeast infection. This is when a woman gets candidiasis at least four times a year or more often. Some women even get infections every month around the same time due to hormonal changes. Others will develop symptoms in as little as a week after their last yeast infection treatment. One thing that may help many of these women is to take a closer look at their diets.

Today’s modern western diet is jam packed with highly refined and processed foods, instead of the natural, whole foods of our ancestors. The one thing that all the processed foods have in common is that they are full of carbohydrates, particularly sugars. Anyone who is a baker knows that yeast will grow when you feed it sugar. While the species of yeast that causes candidiasis is not the same species as the yeast in baking, it still feeds on the same substances.

Tips to Avoid Frequent Yeast Infections

3 out of every 4 women will experience a yeast infection at some point in their life. For most, this is a relatively minor annoyance that is easily treated and they won′t have to think about it again. For some women, however, frequent yeast infections make their lives miserable and they are often desperately looking for a way to stop this cycle. Luckily, there are some things that you can do to reduce your chances of getting repeated infections.

To begin with, if you know you are prone to candidiasis, you need to avoid chemicals, dyes and perfumes in anything that will touch your genital area. This means not using highly scented body care products on that area as well as avoiding colored and/or scented toilet tissues and sanitary napkins. Underwear should not be tight and are best made of white cotton so that they are breathable, keeping that part of the body drier. Pants should also be loosely worn, for the same reason – you need to allow air to circulate in order to not foster the yeast.

Severe Yeast Infection – When To Seek Medical Attention

For most women, a yeast infection is annoying and uncomfortable but it is tolerable and clears up in less than a week. For some women, though, they end up with a severe yeast infection that becomes very painful and keeps flaring up even after treatment. If you find yourself with a lot of pain or that your yeast infection comes back only a week or two after treatment, you should see your doctor. There is usually an underlying health problem that is exacerbating the issue for you.

Those with compromised immune systems are more likely to experience a severe yeast infection. It could be because they have a disease that reduces the ability to fight off infections, like HIV or diabetes. If you are already aware that you have the underlying health condition, the doctor can recommend ways for you to avoid getting so many infections. Believe it or not, if you weren’t aware of a problem before, once the doctor investigates the causes of severe yeast infection, you may find out about one of the larger issues.

There are a number of infections that can present with similar symptoms to a yeast infection so how do you know when it’s symptoms of a yeast infection or some other type of infection? Truthfully, there is only one symptom that you’ll only find with true candidiasis and that is the odor. Unfortunately, the discharge from a yeast infection will have a yeasty, almost beery smell to it which, of course, just increases the embarrassment for women.

Other symptoms of a yeast infection can be found with other infections but if you combine the following with the yeasty smell, you can skip the doctor and just treat the infection for yourself. Often, the first symptom you will encounter is your genital area will be itchy, sometimes to the point of driving you crazy. Sometimes it will even lead to the area being sore and red, even swelling if left long enough.
